In 1972 the eminent cricket historian John Goulstone published Early Club & Village Cricket, a seminal work on cricket in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. For many years John has been researching further references to early cricket.
The Cricket Society is honoured to be publishing John’s Supplement to Early Club & Village Cricket. The entries in the Supplement reference more than 200 towns and villages in England and are arranged by county (with Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex featuring prominently).
Amongst the many new references John has brought to light are:
- The first recorded match in Staffordshire
- The first reference to a cricket club Treasurer
- The second notice of a Cricket Society
- The first reference to cricket in Berkshire
- The first definite reference of a match in Hampshire
- The first reference to cricket in Suffolk
- Possibly the first reference to the word ‘match’
The Supplement to Early Club & Village Cricket is published by The Cricket Society in a limited edition of 50 numbered copies in stiff paper covers of which numbers 6 to 50 are for sale.

John Goulstone won the 2022 Howard Milton Award for Cricket Scholarship awarded jointly by The Cricket Society and the BSSH (British Society of Sports History). As well as his own many publications, John provided significant assistance to Rowland Bowen for his lauded Cricket: A History of its Growth and Development Throughout the World (1970), and (with Roger Packham) to John Major for his excellent, award-winning history of early cricket More Than a Game (2007).
